Kingston Museum offers a free indoor stop in the town centre, with displays connecting the borough’s early history, royal associations and role in the development of moving images.

It is on Wheatfield Way, KT1 2PS. The museum’s own visitor information lists walk-in opening from Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Check that page before travelling, especially around holidays or for a particular event.

    Three permanent galleries

Ancient Origins looks at the area’s earliest inhabitants through archaeological material. Town of Kings follows Kingston’s development and its royal connections.

The third permanent gallery focuses on Eadweard Muybridge, the photographer born in Kingston whose work explored movement. His studies and projection experiments connect photography, science and the early history of cinema.

Art Fund’s collection guide describes the museum’s holdings of glass lantern slides, zoopraxiscope discs and Muybridge’s 1878 San Francisco panorama. Those holdings do not mean every item is permanently on display, so contact the museum if you want to see a particular object.

    Plan the practical details

The official access information lists level entry to the building and access to the Muybridge Gallery by platform lift or through Kingston Library. There is a bell beside the front entrance for anyone needing help with the doors. Read the linked access guide for your own requirements.

The current events programme is the place to look for talks, exhibitions and activities. General admission being free does not establish the price or booking requirements of every activity.
